In 2021 Trey Lance was drafted by the 49ers with the 3rd overall pick. He was drafted to take Jimmy Garoppolo’s spot once his contract expired. Trey started 5 games with the 49ers before he suffered a season ending ankle injury on a run up the middle.
In the 2022 NFL Draft with the last pick (255th) the 49ers selected Brock Purdy Mr. Irrelevant. In past history the last pick very rarely gets a spot on the roster but Brock did. After Trey and Jimmy both got hurt during the season Brock took the starting job over for the 2nd half of the season. In the games Brock started he went 6-0 in the regular season and secured a spot in the playoffs. In the playoffs Brock won the Wild Card game against Seattle and then beat the Cowboys in the Conference Championship. In the NFC Championship Brock unfortunately got injured and the 49ers were onto their 4th quarterback in the season who also in the game got hurt.
During the offseason 49ers signed Sam Darnold to fight for the starting spot with Brock and Trey. During the 4 week preseason Brock won the starting job but Trey was 3rd string and felt betrayed. Sam Darnold beat him to the backup spot so he demanded a trade. After Darnold was announced as the backup quarterback he demanded a trade and the cowboys traded a 4th round pick to the 49ers for QB Trey lance.
