Mr. Ruvalcaba, also known as Mr. R., is the track coach at Ernest Righetti High School. Mr. Ruvalcaba has been running since 4th grade and took it up as a hobby. To understand Mr. R better, he enjoys anime, soccer, football, and exploring different cultures through new foods. Some of his favorite hobbies include hiking and watching movies, preferably scary ones. “I prefer scary movies. There’s something about being on the edge of your seat,” Mr. Ruvalcaba said.
He became a coach because he wanted to teach and coach track simultaneously. After running for several years at Righetti, he had the opportunity to become an assistant coach in Santa Maria, as many of the runners said it would help ease some stress. He eventually transitioned into coaching cross-country.
What is track and field? Many people ask this question. Track and field consists of a variety of events. The track events range from short sprints to middle distances, like the 4×400 relay, where athletes form teams of four runners who each complete 400 meters. The field events include high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vaulting, as well as throwing events and hurdles. Mr. Ruvalcaba says he is fortunate to work closely with the head coach, who creates schedules that help ease his mind, as well as the runners and newcomers. The schedule typically begins with longer distances, followed by recovery the next day, and includes speed or tempo workouts throughout the week.
The top female runner Mr. R mentions is Amaya. Since she was a freshman, she has been the top girl on the team, continually improving each year. “Every year she’s been our top girl, and she just keeps progressing further and further,” Mr. Ruvalcaba said. The top male runner is Anj, a junior. “He’s been running year-round, including during the summer.”
You should join track and field because there is space for everyone, even if you are not a fast runner. Running events can help you release stress or clear your mind. (Mr. R is the one in white).
