He is the youngest of eight children, seven of them being boys. Canelo in Spanish translates for cinnamon in English which is a common nickname for people in Mexico who are born with red hair. Canelo started his boxing career at the age of 13, watching his older brother Rigoberto debut as a professional boxer.
