Before I had quails, I didn’t think much about quail eggs. I’d maybe seen them once or twice at the store or online somewhere but I never thought I’d be collecting them from my own birds. Now? I absolutely love them and not just because they’re cute and tiny. I have two female quails who lay eggs for me. Unlike chickens, quails begin laying between 6-8 weeks of age. Chickens lay between 4-6 months of age. Every day, they leave me these little speckled eggs, they lay once a day. And they lay wherever, so it’s always a search looking for them. But beyond how adorable they are, quail eggs are actually really good for you. They’re packed with nutrients like protein, iron, and B vitamins, and a lot of people say they’re easier to digest than chicken eggs. I’m not a nutritionist but I can tell you they make me feel good, and they taste amazing. They’re a bit richer and creamier than chicken eggs perfect for soft boiling, adding to avocado toast, or just popping a few with some salt when I need a quick snack. In all honesty, I feel like there’s something kind of magical about eating food that comes from animals you care for yourself. My quails are part of my little flock, along with my 5 other birds I have and they each have their own personalities. I love them so much, and every egg feels like a sweet little thank you from them. So yeah quail eggs are cute, healthy, and delicious. But for me, they’re also a reminder of how good life can be when you slow down, love your animals and enjoy the little things.
