Gas prices in Santa Barbara County have recently been rising, causing concern for many local residents. In early 2026, the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the area climbed to around $5.70 per gallon, which is significantly higher than it was just a month earlier. For example, the average price in the Santa Barbara–Santa Maria–Lompoc region was about $4.56 a month earlier, showing a rapid increase in a short amount of time.
One major reason for the increase in gas prices is global events affecting the supply of oil. A recent conflict involving Iran has disrupted important oil shipping routes and caused oil prices worldwide to rise. Because oil is the main ingredient used to produce gasoline, when global oil prices increase, gas prices at local stations also go up. As a result, average gas prices across the United States have recently climbed above $4 per gallon, while California prices remain much higher.

Local factors also contribute to the high cost of gas in California and Santa Barbara County. California has higher fuel taxes, stricter environmental regulations, and a cleaner fuel blend requirement that can make gasoline more expensive than in other states. In addition, refinery closures and limited supply in the state can push prices even higher. Because of these combined global and local factors, many residents in Santa Barbara County are paying some of the highest gas prices in the country.
