The Grammys

Maya Pettiford, Writer

The Gramophone awards first took place on May 4th, 1959 in Los Angeles California and 28 awards were presented. In the sixty-two years since then the name has changed to the Grammys and has become a worldwide watched event. The Grammys for this year will take place this Sunday, April 3rd, 2022, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and they will give out more than 75 awards.

The Grammys are presented by The Recording Academy and streams on CBS. They are one of the big three music awards of the year, alongside the American Music Awards that are held in the Fall and the Billboard Music Awards that are held in the Summer.

The Recording Academy holds the Grammys each year to recognize “Outstanding Achievement in the music industry” of the United States. They give out awards in dozens of categories. Not everyone knows that they actually give out many more awards than we see on TV. The most popular categories that people receive awards in are best new artist, song of the year, album of the year, and record of the year. Only two artists have ever won all 4 of these awards, Christopher Cross and Adele.
