Technology is everywhere. From the moment we wake up to our phone alarms to the end of the day when we doom scroll through social media apps. We use it for entertainment, to communicate, learn, and online shop. While technology has made life easier and faster. But have we become too dependent on it? It’s worth examining whether technology is helping us or harming us.
One reason many people believe we are too dependent on technology is because of how difficult it feels to function without it. When the internet crashes or even when a phone battery dies.. suddenly a simple task feels difficult. Students rely on laptops to finish and complete assignments. Adults depend on google maps as much as students depend on laptops just to navigate around a place they have been before. Instead of strengthening our memory and communication skills we tend to rely on our constant technology usage. While these tools are designed to help us in everyday life, they also might be making us less independent.
The negative effects of technology are becoming difficult to ignore. One concern is technology’s impact on people’s mental health. If you constantly expose yourself to social media it can cause you to want to compare yourself to people online, it can make you more insecure, have more anxiety and so much more. The constant pressure coming from all of these things can cause stress that makes it hard to relax.
Another negative effect is how technology affects communication. Making video calls and messages the standard for communicating with anyone. People may try to spend more time just looking at screens instead of attempting to engage or talk to those around them. Conversations in real life need real connections to start to build a friendship.
While technology has made everything insanely easier for us, its growing needs and presence raises important concerns. From its impact on mental health to its effect on communication and independence, relying heavily on technology can have consequences, but do note that technology is not the problem, it is us, humanity who does not know how to obsess over it. We can enjoy the benefit of technology without it having to control our lives.
